10,000 steps charity challenge update
04 Jul 2023

We like to think our staff are a pretty fit and healthy bunch, but clocking up 10,000 steps a day is proving to be a tough challenge!

SWG Group has signed up to the Severn Hospice Walk In Our Shoes fundraiser, with 14 staff members set the challenge of walking 10,000 steps a day - the average distance walked by a hospice nurse - for a whole month.

So how are they getting on?

With the majority of the team being office-based they are having to go above and beyond to get the steps in outside of their work hours - even if it means walking around their local neighbourhood at 9pm at night!

Some have been walking, some have been playing football and some have been running half marathons - the important thing is to hit 10,000 every day.

We asked them what’s been the most challenging moment so far?

Nigel Pugh, contracts manager: “Completing the 10,000 steps after a long day at work during a thunderstorm.”

Michael Peters, apprentice quantity surveyor: “I had a 31,000-step day which made the next few days a struggle.”

Angela Jones, accounts assistant: “Knowing that you still have 3,000 steps left to do, and all you want to do is go to bed!”

Kathryn Grey, estimating and business development assistant: “Making time to go for a walk especially when it was soooo hot.”

It’s certainly a big challenge and we would like to say a huge thank you to every member of staff for their dedication to the cause!

And that’s not all! We are undertaking more fundraising challenges for Severn Hospice this year:

We are entering a team in the Shrewsbury Dragon Boat Race on Sunday, July 23, so please come along and cheer us on!

Staff are volunteering some time at the Severn Hospice HQ during August, and then in September an intrepid band of SWG walkers will be undertaking the coastal route of Ynyslas to Llangrannog, a total of 45.6 miles over two days.

All of these challenges have the same aim - raising awareness and funds for Severn Hospice, which does such an amazing job for families during an incredibly difficult time of their lives.
