OUR SWG CONSTRUCTION ACADEMY
The SWG Academy has been a huge success and involves professionals from SWG taking practical and academic lessons with students working towards a GCSE in construction and the built environment. So far this year Y10 group had a go at carpentry studwork, calculating materials and visited one of our construction sites where we were in the process of building single storey classroom extension at Ysgol Pennant. The Y11 group have completed their plumbing assessments and undertaken comparative building exercise.
MOCK INTERVIEWS
The mock interviews offered students a valuable opportunity to experience a job interview scenario, allowing them to explore its dynamics, understand potential questions, and gain insight into employer’s expectations. This is a fantastic initiative to be a part of for the second year running at Ysgol Calon Cymru in Llandrindod Wells.
As part of the SWG Construction Academy Y11 group syllabus, we have carried out CV workshops and further conducted formal interviews. As a result, 3 students with the best-written CV’s and interview performance joined us for their work experience placements.
MOCK INTERVIEWS SCHOOL AND COLLEGE COLLABORATIONS
Wherever we are working, we aim to collaborate with local schools and colleges, whether that’s through donations, offering work experience or delivering informative talks.
We donated funds to Llandysilio Church in Wales School which contributed to a fantastic ‘Love Our School Day’.

Site Manager Terry delivered an assembly at Brown Clee CE Primary School to keep students up to date on the progress of the works on site and show students what their future classroom will look like.
Here our Construction Director – Shaun, and Project Manager -Mike visited Churchstoke CP School and delivered talks on Health & Safety.
THE NORTH POWYS EMPLOYERS ENGAGEMENT FORUM
Our Director Jacqui Gough is part of this dynamic group, alongside PCC and NPTC trying to improve the links between local businesses and education providers in the area. Jacqui had the opportunity to present to numerous members of both local businesses and education providers in both North and South Powys on how SWG collaborate with schools in the area and used the SWG Academy as a great example of this collaborative approach.
Through this group Jacqui has also been able to provide volunteer days at the newly created Employment Hwb at Newtown College, through the Employer in Residence programme, providing careers guidance and CV writing skills to the students on a drop-in basis which has proved to be a huge success with many employers in the area.
EMPLOYER OF THE MONTH
And to top it all off we were delighted to have been selected as the NPTC Group of Colleges’ employer of the month for February 2023.
Following a nomination from the college group’s Business Engagement Advisor for North Powys, Karen Harris-Vernon, SWG Group was chosen for commitments to upskilling staff and also for our support for community-based initiatives.
The group has highlighted our support for the North Powys Employers Engagement Forum, Newtown College Employer In Residence programme – the first one in Wales – and the SWG Construction Academy at Llanfyllin High School. You can read all about it here.
We are dedicated to supporting, guiding, and encouraging individuals to reach their full potential. Our involvement in careers fairs, school and college events, collaborations, as well as running of the SWG Construction Academy is a testament to our ongoing commitment to nurturing talent.
After all we are ‘’Creating the future together ‘’.
