Charities the big winners as SWG’s 20th anniversary year draws to a close

What a year! Our 20th anniversary celebrations are drawing to a close as we approach the end of 2022... where does the time go? We set out with the intention of making it a memorable 12 months in celebration of our ‘china’ anniversary and it has certainly been that - and more. We are so proud of the charity fundraising efforts of our amazing staff over the course of the year which have allowed us to support a number of deserving causes.

 THE STORY SO FAR

The challenges forced upon charities through the current financial squeeze makes fundraising all the more important right now and we are delighted at what we have been able to achieve this year.

Through the efforts of our workforce, we have been able to do this:

  • We presented a cheque for £1,750 to Radnorshire Wildlife Trust in  Llandrindod Wells which has been used to help repair and replace the fencing at Pentwyn Farm.

Four of our team ran the Welshpool 10k in aid of the Ponthafren Association, a Mid Wales mental health charity.

Six staff members completed the Shropshire Mud Run for the Welsh Air Ambulance.

Sophie Shorey, SWG Group’s financial controller, took part in a 24-hour Spinathon to raise funds foThe Derwen Charity, which supports the work of Derwen College near Oswestry.

We presented £250 each to the 1940s Welshpool WeekendMonty Literary Festival and Treowen Jubilee Celebrations.

We made a donation to Shine Balloon Race – something we do every year. The virtual balloon race raises money for the charity Shine, which supports thousands of adults living with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus, across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

In June a team took on the Macmillan Cancer Support longest day golf challenge, two teams of four players started playing at 4am!

Later in the summer we entered a team in the Welsh Three Peaks challenge, aiming to climb and descend  SnowdonCadair Idris and Pen y Fan in just 24 hours. Our team achieved the challenge in just 16 hours, raising money for Ponthafren along the way.

SWG’s marketing executive and liaison officer Natalia Lewiecka completed the Great North Run half marathon in September, in aid of Shine.

We donated six tickets for Circus Starr to people in the community.

We were also delighted to donate to Friends of Abermule and Abermule Community Council while working in the area.

Three local food banks benefited from a share of £600 in cash donations

SWG also supported our site manager Stuart Anderson’s championship clay shooting, a horse racing meet at Cilmery Farm, Builth Wells, Mariusz Pilinski at the Irish Pro Invitational Powerlifting competition in Ireland, provided match sponsorship for Welshpool Cricket Club and both home and away kit sponsorship for Welshpool Football Club.

We were excited to sponsor local rally team Osian Davies and Robi Wood for the second time and wish them all the best in the upcoming night rally in Devon and Welsh Rally Road Championship during 2023.

Local raffle and auction events were handed a variety of prize donations from luxury food hampers to Wales rugby tickets and more.

And on December 8 our staff donned their Christmas jumpers for the day to raise money for Save the Children.

THE MONEY

In total our staff and contractors have raised in excess of £6,000 for charitable causes over the course of the year.

In addition, SWG has handed out more than £3,000 worth of sponsorship, prizes and other donated goods.

THE FUTURE

Whilst 2023 is not our 20th anniversary year, we will not forget those in need.

This hasn’t been just a one year thing, SWG Group want to make a difference to those around us and nearby all our projects, continually.

We will continue our community benefit scheme, benefitting groups and people near any of the jobs we complete – both with donations of goods, equipment or funds.

And, not only that, we’ll be announcing our 2023 ‘charity of the year’ in the new year, so watch this space.

We would like to thank everyone who has taken part in fundraising activities for their efforts and all the people who have supported them through sponsorship and donations – what a year!
