SWG investing in the future
02 May 2023

We are proud of our commitment to helping the next generation of construction workers take the first steps in their career.

The last few weeks have seen SWG staff attending a number of events, along with our regular SWG Academy sessions at Ysgol Llanfyllin.

Interviews

The SWG Academy has been a huge success and involves professionals from SWG taking practical lessons with students working towards a GCSE in construction and the built environment.

Recent sessions have included decoration and plastering with Graham Davies, and a CV workshop led by SWG director, Jacqui Gough, helping the students understand the importance of writing a strong CV to send to potential employers. On a similar theme, SWG management team were part of the Year 10 mock interview panel, giving feedback to students on what is a very important skill when applying for jobs.

Machinery simulator

We took along a special simulator to give SWG Academy students the opportunity to try their hand at operating various types of construction machinery which they really enjoyed.

One of the students said: “It was a great opportunity for us to have a go at operating construction machinery which otherwise would not be possible.”

Big thanks to the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB Wales) for supporting us with the delivering this opportunity.

We also took the simulator to the NPTC careers fair at Newtown College, where we were talking to young people about the fantastic opportunities in the construction industry. It’s fair to say the machinery simulator provided a lot of interest and everyone had fun trying it out!

Women in Construction

Meanwhile, our pre-construction manager, Sarah Priday, attended the Women in Construction event at Shrewsbury Colleges Group to talk about how SWG is bucking the trend in a male-dominated industry, with 38% of our senior management team being female, as well as 20% of our total staff.

We are proud of this statistic and are always doing our best to encourage more women to enter this fantastic industry!
