SWG secures contract for major refurbishment of Wrexham markets

We are delighted to be working with Wrexham County Borough Council (WCBC) on a major refurbishment of Wrexham markets, aiming to bring significant improvements to both the butchers and general market halls. The Grade II-listed General and Butchers markets lie at the heart of the Wrexham City Centre Conservation Area and form part of the Wrexham Townscape Heritage Scheme, funded through the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Welsh Government – Transforming Towns Fund, and Wrexham County Borough Council capital programme

During the summer, work will commence on the full refurbishment of the general market and butchers market buildings, which will involve the installation of new internal stalls and redecoration.

SWG Construction has been awarded the contract to undertake this project on behalf of WCBC, following our strong track record of completing major projects across Mid Wales.

We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work on this refurbishment in Wrexham.

The scope of the project includes a comprehensive mechanical and electrical upgrade, including the installation of a new Building Management System (BMS), roof repairs, stonework repairs, and the replacement or refurbishment of the historic shop fronts.

Additionally, brand-new market stalls with security shutters will be provided, as well as improved level access facilities to the butcher’s market.

“We are very excited about getting started on what is a complete refurbishment of both market halls,” she said. “As a company experienced in working with historic buildings, we will ensure these Grade-II listed buildings receive the specialist care and attention they deserve.

“The markets hold great significance within Wrexham city centre, and the completion of this refurbishment project is expected to enhance their visual appeal and contribute to the overall regeneration of the town.”

Cllr Nigel Williams, Lead member for Economy at Wrexham County Borough Council said: “Wrexham is historically known as a market town, and we fully expect our markets to play an important part in the future successes of Wrexham now that we are a city.

“When complete the Wrexham Market refurbishments will capitalise on the city’s historic features and contribute to Wrexham’s vision to be an attractive, distinctive, and accessible 21st century city, where people want to live, work and play.
