SWG Academy students get hands on with work experience opportunities

As the first academic year of the SWG Group Academy to help construction workers of the future comes to an end, some students have had hands-on experience working on our sites. The lucky few have benefited from work with our carpenters, electricians, ground workers and health and safety manager. Enabling them to put into practice what they’ve been learning in the classroom with our industry experts.
The SWG Group Academy was launched in September thanks to a unique partnership with Ysgol Llanfyllin. The children there have since received regular tuition from SWG experts as part of their GCSE course to gain knowledge and practical skills which could lead to a career in construction.

One student partnered with our electrician Nick Roberts, assisting him on projects including both the roofing and kitchen projects for Powys County Council and a refurbishment project for Wrexham University.

Another hard working student had two days assisting a ground works team preparing the footings for a new build property before joining the electricians for the remaining three days to have a go at wiring some lighting for the new Highways depot in Llandrindod Wells.

Our third work experience student headed out to a housing project in Llanidloes where we’ve been working hard to upgrade the communal and external areas of these properties to improve the quality of life for the residents there. The student, who has a keen interest in carpentry, joined two carpenters for the week to complete new decked areas to the rear of the properties as well as shuttering for new external stairways.

“After the apprenticeship finished I stayed with them and started doing more advanced carpentry jobs, fitting staircases and roofing, then went on to start fitting bathrooms and doing plumbing too.”

The students, all working towards a GCSE in Constructing and the Built Environment, have impressed us at SWG Group with their positive can-do attitudes and our workforce has also enjoyed turning their hands to teaching and sharing their knowledge with the workforce of the future.

Throughout their two year course the students receive tuition in carpentry, plumbing, electrics, plastering, tiling, bricklaying and health and safety requirements.

We are all so pleased the SWG Group Academy is going well and are enjoying seeing the growth in the students after the first year.

Partnering with Ysgol Llanfyllin was an exciting move for our company when it launched in September and we are just as excited now. It’s important that we all do everything we can to train and encourage the future generations of the industry.

Well done to all involved and we hope they have a relaxing summer break, ready to start hard work again in September
